Homeschooling Top 7 Tips

Updated: Sep 9, 2020

It's new but someone has been there before! With almost half a decade of experience educating children between us, Teachers, Daisy and Nykiiah are here to help with our top 7 tips to get you through these first weeks.

Welcome to Day 1 as an official home educator! It may seem overwhelming but we know you are excited as well. Teaching your child and being in control of their academic growth in a more intimate way is such a valuable component to parenting. To help you get through these first days, we've compiled this list to help you.

Before you do anything, make a schedule. A schedule creates expectations throughout the day. However, you must be willing to be a little flexible with time. This is a tight balancing act because overly restrictive schedules cause too much stress and can be discouraging when things don't go as planned but very loose planning (or the lack of planning) creates chaos and disorganization.

  1. Begin each day with a 1 to 5 minute morning meeting. Explain expectations for the day, where lesson materials can be found and reassess the previous day's events if possible

  2. Provide an example of what you expect your child to do each day.

  3. Reach out to Family World School teachers for help.

  4. Set up regular meal times and breaks throughout the day

  5. Respect your child's feelings and allow them to be frustrated about things they don't understand. We've all been there.

  6. Be kind to yourself. Take a break. If you don't know something, great, you're human. When you make a mistake, learn from it and reach out for help.

  7. Try not to emulate school at home. Your home is a safe haven for your child and for you. Education will look differently.
