Unbought and Unbossed

"Unbought And Unbossed": When a Black Woman Ran for the White House

The congresswoman tried to wine the White House by consolidating the black vote and the women's vote, but she ran into trouble.

The slogan "unbought and unbossed" appeared on Chisholm's campaign posters, one of which resides in the collection of the National Museum of African American of History and Culture (NMAAHC, Gift of Ellen Brooks)

April 25, 2016

A black woman's bespectacled face appeared in front of a podium. Her head was barely visible above the forest of microphones. It was 1972, and Shirley Chisholm was announcing her historic run for the White House, challenging fellow Democrats George McGovern, Hubert Humphrey, Edmund Muskie, Henry M. Jackson and George Wallace. “I am not the candidate of Black America, although I am Black and proud. I am not the candidate of the woman's movement of this country, although I am a woman and I am equally proud of that.”

Before Carol Moseley Braun, before Barack Obama, before Hillary Clinton, Shirley Chisholm was both the first woman and the first African American to run for the nomination of a major party for President of the United States. Already the first black woman to be elected to the United States Congress in 1968, Chisholm made her ambitious attempt to win the White House decades before her country was ready for her, garnering just 152 delegate votes at the Democratic National Convention.

Robert Gottlieb was first an intern in Chisholm’s Congressional office and later hired as the student coordinator for her presidential campaign, which would come to rely heavily on the support of college students. “She was unafraid of anybody,” says Gottlieb. “Her slogan was 'unbought and unbossed.' She was really unbossed.”

“So I’m 21 years old. I'm a senior in college. I’m raring to go,” says Gottlieb, who is now an attorney in New York City. “And my first trip was to North Carolina to go to some colleges to try to organize students. And I had to wait until we received the bumper stickers and brochures that we could hand out. Coming from the printer they were in boxes. . . . but on the outside of the box you had one bumper sticker. On the other was one brochure, ‘Chisholm for President.’ I took a plane to Raleigh, North Carolina. And I go to pick up my bags and the brochures and bumper stickers from the luggage carousel. And scrawled all over it was ‘go home n*****.’ That's how the campaign began.”

Shirley Chisholm Today Monologue

What is a Monolouge? What is a Soliloquy?

A monologue might be delivered to an audience within a play, as it is with Antony's speech, or it might be delivered directly to the audience sitting in the theater and watching the play. But a soliloquy — from the Latin solus ("alone") and loqui ("to speak") — is a speech that one gives to oneself.

Example of Monologue:

Assignment:

Imagine that Shirley Chisolm is doing a monologue about her life. What do you think she would have to say about how she became the first black woman Congresswoman. Based on what you have learned about her, what events do you feel she would highlight in her monologue that will show a well rounded view about her life. Using the example above, write your monologue about Shirley. When you are done practice your monologue in front of the mirror until you feel comfortable with what you have written. Next, have someone video you delivering you monologue and share it with us either here in FWS or in on our Facebook group, Family World School Group. Can't wait to see you put you creative writing skills to work and bring Shirley Chisolm back to life!

Enrichment:

Write your monologue about what you think Shirley Chisolm would say about Kamala Harris journey to running for President of the United States and now being the Vice President Elect.

The Legacy of Shirley Chisolm:

August 11, 2020 at 4:40 p.m. EDT On Jan. 25, 1972, Rep. Shirley Chisholm of New York stood on a platform in a Baptist church in her congressional district in Brooklyn. Behind a dozen microphones, she waved to the crowd and took a leap into history as she declared her bid for the Democratic nomination for presidency of the United States of America. “I am not the candidate for Black America, although I am Black and proud. I am not the candidate of the women’s movement of this country, although I am a woman and I’m equally proud of that. I am not the candidate of any political bosses or fat cats or special interests,” Chisholm said in a clipped voice. “I stand here now without endorsement from many big name politicians or celebrities or any other kind of prop. I do not intend to offer you the tired and glib cliches that have too long been an accepted part of our political life. I am the candidate of the people of America.” The first Black woman elected to Congress ran against Sen. George McGovern (S.D.), who would go on to win the Democratic nomination but lose in a dramatic landslide to Republican Richard Nixon. Chisholm’s presidential bid would be remembered for the power of her speeches, her fortitude, and her brutal honesty about racism, sexism politics and the state of the country. Chisholm’s defiant campaign has received renewed attention, especially after Joe Biden made history Tuesday by announcing that Sen. Kamala Harris will be his running mate, putting a woman of color on a presidential ticket for the first time.

During her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, Harris promoted the logo, “For the People,” which her campaign said was an acknowledgment of Chisholm’s campaign. In a February 2019 interview with the Grio, Harris said Chisholm was extraordinary, powerful and courageous. “She reminds me of the many sayings of my mother and that is, ‘Don’t let anybody tell you who you are. You tell them who you are.’ That was Shirley Chisholm, unbought and unbossed. I stand as so many of us do on her shoulders.”

Extended Vocabulary List:

Don't be afraid of larger words, break them down into root words (Belittle ~ root word little = small, to make something smaller...The interviewer belittled the candidate. ) and smaller words within them like yesterday's assignment. Continue making smaller words out of the larger words from the extended vocabulary list just as you did yesterday on your own paper from home.

What is a CRYPTOGRAM? A cryptogram is a type of puzzle that consists of a short piece of encrypted text. Generally the cipher used to encrypt the text is simple enough that the cryptogram can be solved by hand. Substitution ciphers where each letter is replaced by a different letter or number are frequently used.

HOW TO SOLVE CRYPTOGRAMS

Here are a few tips that should help you get started if you are unfamiliar with this sort of puzzle. If you were to just start doing the puzzles, you would find yourself naturally discovering these and other strategies as your code cracking skills improved.

  • Pencil in a possibility. Fill in all examples of that letter in the puzzle, then see if you have created a dead end and need to go back. For example, say you have decided that the letter Z is an I, but then you discover that one of the encrypted words reads XZZ. You know that there is no word in the English language that ends with two I's, so you need to find a different substitute for the Z.

  • Consider letter frequency. Typically, the most common letters used in English are: E, T, A, O, I, and N. These will be the letters you are most likely to find in most cryptograms.

  • Solve any single letter words first. In English the only single letter words are A and I.

  • Look for common, small words next. The most commonly used words in the English language in order of frequency are: the, of, and, to, in, a, is, that, be, it, by, are, for, was, as, he, with, on, his, at, which, but, from, has, this, will, one, have, not, were, or, all, their, an, I, there, been, many, more, so, when, had, may.

Happy Friday!

We hope everyone's week went well. Did you have fun with the Cryptogram yesterday?

Imagine that you are running for a public office, it could be for president like Shirley Chisolm or a council man in the district where you live or even state governor. In order to get started, go back and first look over Ms. Chisolm's campaign speech.

Ask Yourself:

What would I do to make schools better?

What would I do to make healthcare better?

How would you create more jobs?

What would I do to get COVID19 under control?

These are just a few questions for you to consider as you put together your own campaign. Once you put together what you will say to the people, dress up in your best business looking attire. Next, deliver your campaign promises to your family and friends. To make it ever more engaging for your audience, you could make posters with your name on them and pass them out to they could hold them up during your campaign speech.

Have fun on the campaign trail!
